We decided to spend a few days in Windhoek, capitol of Namibia, before our tour of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana started. We had already spent a couple of days in Johannesburg, but wanted to get another country under our belt if we could, so unwinding and acclimatizing further into our new time zone at a nice hotel sounded like a win.
And a win it was. The Hotel Heinitzburg in Windhoek surpassed all of our expectations. Have you ever stayed at a hotel where the staff were exactly where you needed them to be, at all times? It was almost as if there were trapdoors scattered about the property, and Vasco would simply materialize when the thought that I might need something entered into my head. The staff were incredible, and the service superlative.
Our room was magnificent- large, well laid out, and comfortable.

Room 16 had a lovely nook where we enjoyed our coffee every morning, a sizeable shower in our bathroom, an armchair and footstool with lamp for reading, huge closet, and very comfortable bed with excellent linens.
And when we weren’t luxuriating in our fabulous room, we enjoyed the fantastic deck overlooking Windhoek, along with champagne and hors d’oeuvres and service like you wouldn’t believe.

The grounds were small, simple, and lovely.

Dinner was served in a gorgeous space, and the place settings were as fantastic as the food was delicious.

And overseeing everything was the Queen, the cat in residence. She met us upon arrival, saw us to our table at breakfast, and accepted ear scratches with aplomb.

If you find yourself in Windhoek, do not make the mistake of staying anywhere else. This was one of the best hotels at which we’ve ever had the pleasure of staying.
