Monte Verde

Scorpion in black light

We had a great night’s sleep again in La Fortuna and started early for Monte Verde, the cloud forest of Costa Rica, but not before a really fantastic breakfast at Arenal Manoa, La Fortuna.

Delicioso

We drove for about 3.5 hours on good roads, except for when google led us astray on a ‘shortcut’:

I know I mentioned it previously, but Costa Rica has great roads in good repair, and you should consider driving when you visit. We got a great feel for the country and had a great time transiting from place to place. The shortcut may have been a little bumpy, but it did indeed save us a few minutes and we got to see the countryside as a part of the bargain.

We arrived at Camino Verde B&B and promptly took a nap after checking in, prior to our evening tour of the jungle. I don’t know how it is that you can get so exhausted driving, but we factor that in to our travels and make sure we can sleep for a bit before heading out on our next adventure.

We woke late, around 530, and made our way to the front desk where we awaited the bus to our late night jungle tour. There was a family from Germany who were cracking us up waiting for the same tour, too. Once we arrived, we filled out the requisite paperwork and headed off into the jungle, where we saw birds, scorpions, tarantulas and frogs.

Nighttime sparkle in the jungle

Our accommodations were small, but the bathroom was large and the bed was very comfortable. After our evening jungle tour, we headed into town and people watched, although it was pretty empty. For some reason, Kelly and I have a spirit dog that follows us in every country, and Costa Rica was no different- our spirit dog led the way, and enjoyed pommes frites from our table, before leading us home.

Tomorrow we’ll take a tour of the cloud forest before heading to Jaco.
