The Fast and the Ticketed

We awoke again in a foreign land, utterly refreshed after a night in the Waldorf’s excellent bed, to the sounds of very little- it was still dark outside, but we were AWAKE! Nothing seemed amiss as we called for a new coffee maker, as ours wasn’t working properly. The staff of the hotel showed up almost immediately to replace it, looking somewhat surprised to see we were awake and itching for some caffeine. Hmm. Checked the time- 3am. Oops. But as you are almost certainly aware, sometimes it’s impossible to get back to sleep when you’re half way around the globe and your internal clock is ticking along with the ones back home. So we decide to stay up, have some coffee and a shower, read for a while, and head down to the breakfast on the large patio outdoors.

Breakfast was fantastic, with a large buffet consisting of pastry, perfectly cooked sides and mains, fruit, salad and made to order local cuisine, all served either inside or out in the perfect Persian Gulf morning. The only difficulty was keeping the calorie count low enough! Kelly had seemed oddly preoccupied with her phone this morning, but today was my birthday and if there is one thing that she loves it’s celebrating someone’s birthday. She asked “Are you ready?” and with excitement I nodded yes. On our way out the front door I stopped to take a photo of the array of fabulous cars parked in front, and after I was done with the glamor shot she… handed me the keys to the silver Lamborghini Hurracan! OMG!

Reader, I’m not much of a car guy, but I’ve got to say- driving this thing was a blast, Kelly had arranged for ES Luxury Car Rental Dubai to deliver it to the hotel, and we had it for 24 hours. We ended up driving all over and around Dubai, and I’m happy to report that I only got two speeding tickets (oops. Kelly just informed me it was 3). There are cameras EVERYWHERE, so if you find yourself in a Lamborghini in Dubai, keep an eye on the speedometer, and remember that 160 km is about 100 mph!

Ready to hit the town

At the end of our day Kelly took me to Argentina Grill on the Pointe. We had steak and spicy Syrah while enjoying a fountain show and the pleasure of each other’s company. She then drove me home to a final surprise- birthday cake and candles with champagne to cap off our glamorous and thrilling adventure in Dubai.

Always get the big steak on your birthday

The next day we departed for DC, wondering where in the world we’d head off to next…
